So with credentials, it usually means that as an audience, we are impressed and we are respectful of this person and trust their opinion, especially if it's 35 years.

I know what it is to see older patients, day after day who experienced wariness and confusion in trying to remember all the medication they are taking. It shows, again, and compounds on the idea that this guy is indeed experienced in the field and we should trust anyone, I guess, we should kind of trust the doctor, right, because he's exposed to this type of stuff every single day. It also shows that he is empathetic, which is a great quality to see in a doctor, because he seems to suffer as well when his patients are suffering.

So with that in mind, as an audience, we are more inclined to like him and to value his opinion because he has directly been impacted as a result. When he talks about a child with asthma, it's a very interesting scenario to choose, he could have talked about anyone, he decides to talk about a child. So potentially what this could do is appeal to a particular audience, for example, it could be parents, it could be other people suffering asthma, for example. But let's say if we're parents, generally we're I say, we like I'm a parent, I'm not a parent.

But we're protective towards young people, and you want to remove them from needless suffering as a result. Again, "Those who experienced weariness and confusion," potentially that could appeal to the elderly. So, if you're somebody who's older and you're starting to experience the fact that you're getting a little bit confused or you're forgetting things, then this might really appeal to you and speak to you because it could be the answer that you're looking for. Unfortunately, everyone around him, unaware that he had mild fits, assumed he was drunk and ignored him. That this person who was having epileptic fit, would have a much more positive outcome should he have had an MI card. And we feel sorry for him because nobody should have to experience their illness and be alienated or judged on by the community or by the public.

So as a result, we may be encouraged to go out there and get our own and MI card or recommend our friends or family who we know are, who may be suffering from illnesses to get an MI card. What is it, guys? Inclusive language. So if you don't know already, inclusive language engages the audience because it encourages them to feel included and responsible in whatever the author is talking about, so we feel like there's something that we can do in this case. So maybe it shows that this doctor isn't just a doctor who's distant and unfeeling, but he sees us, patients, as people and as friends, people that he cares about. And so, again, we're more inclined to listen to this doctor because we see him in a positive light. If this is something that's taken away from the person, but a Medi-Info Card could help relieve them of that, then maybe they should do it, maybe we should stop advocating for MI cards.

Generalization is when it's indicated that everyone agrees, like we can all sympathize because if you don't seem like you sympathize, well then you're kind of that a-hole in the corner that's like being rude and not caring while everyone else is. So of course you're kind of more inclined to want to agree and sympathize and therefore support MI card. So we can trust Medi-Info, it's going to do its job at making sure that people are well looked after.

We don't want them to go out there and feel anxious either, right? You can see from all the different lines and where they're going, that I try to make connections to other parts of the article as I go through the piece, because I think it's really important to be able to look at things on more holistic scale than rather just one thing on a micro level. This means that you're able to better understand the contention, as well as the arguments that the author uses to build up that contention. Language Analysis also known as Analysing Argument, Argument Analysis, and an array of other names is comparatively the most different of the three parts of the VCE English study design.

The other two parts of English, Text Response and Comparative, focus on analysing texts like novels and films where students are then expected to produce an extended piece of writing reflecting on those texts' ideas, themes and messages. Unlike Text Response and Comparative, in Language Analysis you will be asked to read 'cold material' meaning that you won't have seen the piece before, i.

You are expected to read the article, analyse the persuasive techniques used by the author, and express this in an essay. Let's get into it! What are teachers and examiners expecting to see in your essays? Note: Some schools may express the following points differently, however, they should all boil down to the same points - what is necessary in a Language Analysis essay.

The first most important step is to understand the contention and arguments presented in the text because you'll base your entire analysis on your assumption. This can be tricky if you're unfamiliar with the contentious topic, or if the writer expresses their ideas in complex ways. In the worst case scenario, you'll misinterpret what the author is arguing and this will subsequently mean that your analysis will be incorrect. Never fear! There are many tactics to try and ascertain the 'right' contention - we'll go into detail later.

This is where 'language techniques' come into play. You're expected identify the language used by the writer of the text and how that's intended to persuade the audience to share their point of view. There are too many language techniques to count, but you're probably already familiar with inclusive language, rhetorical questions and statistics. For most students, this is the trickiest part of Language Analysis. When examiners read essays, they are expected to get through about essays in an hour! This results in approximately 5 minutes to read, get their head around and grade your essay - not much time at all! The number of allocated marks are:. Exactly when Language Analysis is assessed within each unit is dependent on each school; some schools at the start of the Unit, others at the end.

The time allocated to your SAC is also school-based. Often schools use one or more periods combined, depending on how long each of your periods last. In your exam, you get a whopping total of 3 hours to write 3 essays Text Response, Comparative, and Language Analysis. The general guide is 60 minutes on Language Analysis, however, it is up to you exactly how much time you decide to dedicate to this section of the exam. Your Language Analysis essay will be graded out of 10 by two different examiners. Your two unique marks from these examiners will be combined, with 20 as the highest possible mark. This is just to get you thinking about the different study methods you can try before a SAC.

You've got exams dating back to , so there are no shortages of practice papers! Make sure you brush up on the definitions of persuasive techniques. These mistakes do happen! However, I wanted to achieve more. I tried using more advanced language techniques, tried to make my analyses more complex, but they all failed. Start testing out strategies that work for you. For example, try using idea-based-colouring. This means that if the article discusses injustice — for all techniques you identify dealing with injustice, highlight it yellow.

For freedom, highlight them green. This will have you annotating and grouping ideas in one go, saving time and confusion. Another approach is to use technique-based-colouring, where you highlight same or similar techniques in the one colour. If you haven't watched this video series, don't worry if it doesn't make sense to you for now. The point here is how the colours help me to quickly locate ideas when I'm writing my essay. Once you've done some analysis and revision , it's time to write plans!

Plans will help ensure you stick to your essay topic, and have a clear outline of what your essay will cover. This clarity is crucial to success in a Language Analysis essay. Doing plans is also an extremely time-efficient way to approach SACs. Rather than slaving away hours upon hours over writing essays, writing plans can will save you the burnout, and get you feeling confident faster.

Writers only get better by actually writing. Even if you just tackle a couple of essays then at least you will have started to develop a thinking process that will help you to set out arguments logically, utilise important quotes and time yourself against the clock. It will help you write faster as well — something that is a major problem for many students. With that said, let's get into how to write a Language Analysis next. Since we've established that Language Analysis is quite different from Text Response and Comparative, it's not surprising that the essay has its own set of best practices and rules.

Depending on how many texts you're given in your SAC or exam it can be up to 3 texts , you should have an idea of how you plan to execute your essay accordingly - whether that be through a block structure, bridge structure or integrated structure. Try to keep your introduction to the point. There's no need to prolong an introduction just to make a set number of sentences. It's always better to be concise and succinct, and move into your main body paragraphs where the juicy contents of your essay resides.

In Language Analysis, it seems that schools teach their students different acronyms, whether it be TEE :. And if your teacher or school teaches you something slightly different to the aforementioned acronyms - that's okay too. At the end of the day, the foundations in what's expected are the same. Below is an integrated structure example:. As you're writing essays, you'll probably find that you're using the word 'persuades' very often. Whether Language Analysis or Analysing Argument is your favourite section of the English course or you just wish you could read an article without analysing the effect of a generalisation, here are some quick and simply tips to ensure you can maximise your marks in Section C! Create a word bank full of different words you can interchange throughout your analysis to eliminate any repetition!

Remember you are analysing the language the writer uses, not arguing the contention of the writer! However instead of using these generalised textbook effects, analyse the words WITHIN the pun and see how these words may affect readers. What to do: Readers may feel concerned due to the increase in fast food consumption. The visual can either complement the article or oppose the views of the writer. Most of your marks will come from your analysis so there is no need to spend copious amounts of time perfecting your introductions and conclusions. Keep them short and concise! It is simply impossible to analyse every single technique the writer uses in their article.

You will not be marked down for what you do not analyse! In your Language Analysis or Analysing Argument SAC, you will be required to analyse how language is used to persuade in three or more texts. Of course, there are multiple ways to tackle this task, but here is just one possible method! Remember to use the background information already provided for you on the task book!

Next, introduce the texts one at a time, including the main aspects for each eg. You want to show the examiner that you are comparing the articles, rather than analysing them separately. To do this, use appropriate linking words as you move onto your outline of each new text. You may choose to finish your introduction with a brief comment on any key difference or similarity. Sample introduction: The recent return to vinyls and decline in CD sales has sparked discussion about the merits of the two forms of recorded sound.

In his feature article, For the Record, published in the monthly magazine Audioworld in June , Robert Tan contends that vinyls, as the more traditional form, are preferable to CDs. He utilises a disparaging tone within his article to criticise CDs as less functional than vinyls. Spend the first half of your essay focused on Article 1, then move into Article 2 for the second half of your essay and, for those doing three articles, the later part of your essay based on Article 3. This structure is the most simple of all, and unfortunately does not offer you ample opportunity to delve into an insightful analysis. Hence, we would not recommend this structure for you. If possible, adopt the Bridge or Integrated structures discussed below.

Analyse the first text, including any visuals that may accompany it. Students often spend too long on the first text and leave too little time to analyse the remaining texts in sufficient depth, so try to keep your analysis specific and concise! Remember to focus on the effects on the reader, rather than having a broad discussion of persuasive techniques. Linking is essential in body paragraphs! Begin your analysis of each new text with a linking sentence to enable a smooth transition and to provide a specific point of contrast. Continue to link the texts throughout your analysis, for example, you could compare:. In Lisa's videos above, she suggests a short and sweet summary in your conclusion by incorporating some quotes from the author's own conclusion.

Alternatively, you could opt for a different approach. In your conclusion, aim to focus on how each text differs from the others in terms of the main techniques used by the author, and more importantly, the effect of these techniques on the reader or audience. You should summarise the main similarities and differences of each text without indicating any personal bias ie. For example, a point of comparison could be the audience appeal - will any particular audience group be particularly engaged or offended?

Of the five daughters born to Mr.

Bingley despite his friend, Mr. Darcy, initial coldness and apathy towards her younger sister Elizabeth. Though Mr. While Jane and Mr. Bingley begin to fall for each other, Elizabeth receives and declines a marriage proposal from her supercilious cousin Mr. While Mr. Darcy is in residence at Netherfield Park, Elizabeth finds and enjoys the company of a young officer named Mr. Wickham who too has a strong disliking for Mr. Wickham claims it was Mr. Darcy who cheated him out of his fortune, which then deepens Elizabeth's initial ill impression of the arrogant man. After a ball is held at Netherfield Park, the wealthy family quits the estate, leaving Jane heartbroken. Darcy fails to tell Mr. Bingley as he has persuaded him not to court Jane because of her lesser status.

While there, Mr. Darcy appears and proposes to Elizabeth unexpectedly claiming he loves and admires her. To Mr. Bingley apart. Darcy later apologies in a letter and admits to persuading Mr. Bingley not to pursue Jane, but argues that her love for him was not obvious. Elizabeth joins her Aunt and Uncle in visiting Mr. It is there that Elizabeth learns from the housekeeper that Mr. Darcy is a generous landlord.

Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy then have a chance encounter after he returns home ahead of schedule. Following her previous rejection of him, Mr. Mr Darcy happens upon Elizabeth as she receives the terrible news that Lydia has run off with Wickam in an event that could ruin her family. Darcy then going out in search for Wickham and Lydia to hurry their nuptials. When Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy return to Netherfield Park, Elizabeth is pleased to see him though Darcy shows no sign of his regard for her. Jane and Mr. Bingley soon become engaged. Soon thereafter, Lady Catherine visits the Bennets and insists that Elizabth never agree to marry her nephew. Darcy hears of Elizabeth's refusal, and when he next comes, he proposes a second time which she accepts, his pride then humbled and her prejudices overturned.

For much of the novel pride blinds both Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth of their true feelings and hence becomes something both characters must overcome. Indeed, this is why Elizabeth despises the benign Darcy early on in the text, but initially takes a liking to the mendacious Wickham. By the denouement of the novel, both Datcy and Elizabeth have overcome their pride by encouraging and supporting each others own personal evolution.

Indeed, as Darcy sheds his elitism Elizabeth comes to realise the importance of revaluation. The tendency of others to judge one another based on perceptions, rather than who they are and what they value becomes a point of prolific discussion within Pride and Prejudice. As Austen subtly mocks the two lovers biases, she gives the impression that while such flaws are common faulting someone else for the prejudice is easy while recognising it in yourself is hard.

The family unit that Austen displays with Pride and Prejudice becomes the social and domestic sphere as it forms the emotional center of the novel in which she grounds her analysis and discussion. Not only does the family determine the social hierarchy and standing of its members but provides the intellectual and moral support for its children. In the case of the Bennet family, Austen reveals how the individuals identity and sense of self is molded within the family as she presents Jane and Elizabeth as mature, intelligent and witty and lydia as a luckless fool. At the center of its plot, Pride and Prejudice examines the complex inequality that governs the relationships between men and women and the limited options that women have in regards to marriage.

Indeed, the expectations of the Bennet sisters, as members of the upper class is to marry well instead of work. As women can not inherit their families estate nor money, their only option is to marry well in the hope of attaining wealth and social standing. Through this, Austen explains Mrs. Yet Austen is also shown to be critical of those who marry purely for security, thereby offering Elizabth as the ideal, who initially refuses marriage as she refutes financial comfort but ends up marrying for love. As Austen focuses much of her novel on the impacts of class and wealth, she makes clear of the system that favours the rich and powerful and often punishes the weak and poor. Characters like Lady Catherine, whose enforcement of rigid hierarchical positions often leads her to mistreatment of others.

Other characters like Mr. Collins and Caroline are depicted as void of genuine connection as they are unable to live and love outside the perimeter of their social standing. In contrast, characters such as Bingley and the Gardiners offer a respectable embodiment of wealth and class through their kindness and manners. Indeed, Austen does not criticise the entire class system as she offers examples that serve to demonstrate the decency and respectability. Darcy embodies all that a high-class gentleman should as though he is initially presented as flawed and arrogant, it becomes clear as the novel progresses that he is capable of change. Always generous and compassionate, his involvement with Elizabeth helps to brings his nurturing nature to the foreground, evident in his attempts to help the foolish lydia.

This is the opening line of the novel. It is satirical, ironic and mocking in tone. Sam suggests that she works with them and makes a deal with her, which Dean is not in favor of. When the demons leave, he confronts Sam about it. He is unsure whether working with a demon again will go anywhere good, and their tendencies to double-cross work against them. Sam assures Dean that they will get the jump on the demons first because he'll be bringing Castiel along for the ride.

Dean expresses surprise when Sam actually succeeds in calling the angel. When Castiel performs a ritual to find Crowley's location and can't find him, Dean suggests they search Samuel's office for a map or any hint on Crowley's base. They are interrupted by Samuel. Dean first suggests that Samuel tells them where Crowley is, which he refuses to do. When all his attempts to obtain the information lead to nothing, Dean consents to ask Samuel what Crowley is holding over him.

Samuel takes a picture out of his desk drawer, and hands it to Dean: it's a picture of their mother, Mary. Dean expresses a somber opposition towards working with Crowley to bring Mary back, and tries to convince Samuel to learn from the brothers' mistakes. When Samuel's had enough of his protests, he asks them to leave. Samuel later knocks on their door to give them the location, despite his wishing for them not to go there. Before they leave for the prison, Castiel talks to Dean about how he doesn't think retrieving Sam's soul is wise.

He believes that Sam will be broken beyond repair if they force his "mutilated" soul back in. Dean doesn't want to believe this, and reassures Castiel that they'll deal with whatever complications come up. Upon arriving and infiltrating the prison, Dean expresses apprehension on how easy it was getting in, which then comes to fruition when the guards are let out and come after the group. When Meg decides to stay behind to hold off the hounds, Dean, Sam, and Castiel head further in the prison in search for Crowley. Castiel is banished by Samuel, much to Dean's surprise, and the brothers are locked in separate cells by demons. When Samuel later tries to make Dean understand, the two express different ways of seeing the betrayal: Samuel saw it as Dean choosing Sam over Mary, while Dean saw it as Samuel choosing Crowley over his own grandsons.

He also challenges Samuel that he's gonna make it out of the prison and the next time he meets Samuel, he'll kill him. Demons then let him out his cell to be taken to a bigger cell to be eaten alive by Ghouls. Dean fights back, but to no avail. Sam later busts in and kills the ghouls. Dean then finds where Christian has Meg, kills Christian, and then sets off the fire alarm to get Crowley's attention. When the King of Hell enters the room, the brothers confront him and demand he return Sam's soul. Crowley says he can't, and that he was lucky enough to get his body out of the cage.

Crowley breaks from the devil's trap, and flings Sam and Dean pinned to the wall. Castiel soon arrives on the scene and recuses them. Later, outside the prison, Dean thanks Castiel for his help. Castiel tells Dean about the civil war in Heaven, and Dean is genuinely concerned, and asks if there's anything they can do to help. When the angel says there's nothing they can do and apologizes, Dean reassures him that there's no need to apologize, that they understand and are his friends. Dean tries to reason with Sam, saying that he doesn't know how wrong, how messed up he is without a soul.

Sam disagrees and walks away without a word. Dean, now more desperate than ever for Sam's soul, seeks out Death to ask for his help. Dean requests not only for Sam's soul, but for their half-brother Adam as well Death however forces Dean to pick one, in which he chooses Sam. Death hints he has the power to jailbreak Lucifer's cage, and makes a wager with Dean: he will restore Sam's soul if Dean agrees to be Death for a day. He also says he will be able to put a mental wall inside Sam's mind to hold back the memories of the cage, as he also confirms that the results of those memories or of the wall collapsing would be fatal. Before the horseman can explain why he wants this from Dean, he is resurrected by Dr.

Dean informs Sam and Bobby on his deal with Death. Sam is very adamant about keeping his soul out of his body, but later backs down and gives Dean false hope not to mess up. Dean, still very suspicious of his soulless brother, tells Bobby to watch him while he's gone. Dean slips on Death's ring, giving him some of Death's powers and effectively taking his place for 24 hours. The reaper Tessa is assigned to keep an eye on Dean to make sure he has the "minimum screw-up", despite her dislike for Dean's habits of throwing a wrench in everything. Dean does a fair job and kills a few people with a simple touch, following Tessa's list of people, but becomes hesitant when he is supposed to kill a 12 year-old girl.

He refuses to kill her, but this, sets up a chain of events. The girl survives, but innocent people die in her place, as she is disrupting the natural order being alive. Dean tries to save one of these innocent people, going as far as taking off Death's ring. Realizing the mistake he's made, he reluctantly accepts defeat, and finally decides to kill the girl.

Meanwhile, Sam has tied Bobby up and intends to kill him. Dean manages to arrive in time and knocks Sam out and chains him to the cot in the panic room. Dean expresses deep sadness at how he's failed to fulfill his life-long promise of saving his brother: this replicant of Sam could not stay alive; he's dangerous, he's cold, and he's capable of anything. Dean leaves the basement to let his defeat sink in, and finds Death eating. Dean gives back the horseman's ring, and claims his loss of their wager.

Dean then informs him that his wager was rigged right from the start, as he thinks Death would've known he wouldn't last a day. Death denies this, and declares their business is finished, but he offers a bonus: he will still go to Hell to raise Sam's soul. He then encourages Dean to keep digging in what he's learning regarding the souls. Dean quickly heads to the panic room, as they witness Sam struggling to stay away from Death, who has returned with Sam's soul. Despite Sam's protests, Death restores Sam's soul to his body, with a conflicted Dean watching as his brother screams in pain.

A week passes and Sam has still not woken up. Castiel tells Dean that he doesn't think so, leaving Dean alone. Dean heads up stairs and Bobby offers him a drink and a case. Then, to Dean's joy, Sam wakes up and gives Dean a hug, as well as Bobby. Sam later reveals to Dean that he doesn't remember anything other than jumping into the cage. Dean is surprised but relieved to hear this, despite Bobby's suspicion. Dean and Sam go to work on a case involving dragons, during which Dean is overjoyed to have his brother back.

When Bobby finds a sword that could kill the dragons, he sends Dean goes to visit Dr. When Dean tries to pull the sword from the stone he only falls off, and has to resort to blowing up the stone instead. He returns to Sam and the two go after the dragons. They fight off the dragons and save the girls they had held captive. Later on as Dean is happily going thought the pile of gold they found at the dragon lair, Sam confronts him about being soulless and apologizes to Dean.

Dean is shocked that Sam knows and asks who told Sam who then answers that it was Castiel. Dean tells Sam about the wall inside his head, and that what Sam became wasn't really him. Then Sam gets a mysterious text about a case, which gets Dean worried. As they investigate, Dean finds out that Sam has been in this town before, and wants to leave. Sam doesn't want to, which gets Dean angry and he begins to quote John's rules. But they stick around, and Sam begins remembering what happened, much to Dean's displeasure. They do figure out its an Arachne with a grudge against Sam, and defeat it. Afterwards, Sam and Dean have a talk about what happened and Dean tries to make Sam feel better.

Then Sam collapses, and Dean rushes to Sam calling his name. Minutes pass by as a worried Dean tries to wake Sam up. Sam does wake up and Dean helps him up. Dean and Sam talk about what just happened and Dean tells Sam not to scratch the wall again. With that they head out on a case with a mannequin killing people, but Dean gets called away by an "emergency" call from Ben. When Dean arrives, he finds Lisa going out on a date. He and Lisa have a talk, which later results in him leaving permanently. When he comes back, he helps Sam finish the case. Then things take a turn for the weird when Balthazar shows up with someone on his tail.

He gives Dean a "key" and sends the two into the world of "Jared" and "Jensen", where their lives are a television show. After a great deal of effort they manage to get back to their own world, and Castiel tells them he has Balthazar's weapons now. Later on, Dean runs into Samuel again, and it takes Sam and Bobby to hold him back from fulfilling his promise of killing Samuel. In the hall, Gwen goes out to talk to him, and Dean shoots her. It turns out, Dean was possessed by Eve 's latest invention. Unsure who its possessing, the group rid themselves of their weapons. In a turn of events, its Bobby who is possessed by the Khan worm , and Dean questions and kills it.

Bobby does survive. Things again become strange when Balthazar alters history and saves the Titanic. With history changed, Dean finally wins rock, paper, sissors when trying to see whos going to cheer Bobby up and now drives a mustang. He and Sam investigate a string of strange murders, and make the connect to the Titanic. They summon Balthazar who tells them why he did and leaves. When almost killed by Fate, Castiel saves them.

He tells them, its Fate , and she trying to kill them. The only way to survive is to kill her. So Dean and Sam draw out Fate, and Castiel rights the past. Only Sam and Dean remember the past. Dean, Sam and Bobby research how to kill the mother of all, and they find that the ashes of the phoenix can kill her. Dean finds the diary of Samuel Colt , which en-tales how he killed on. So they enlist the help of Castiel to send them back that time to find the ashes. Dean is beside himself with excitement to go back to the wild west. So they head back, and find out the Phoenix is killing people. So Dean tries to set up posse, but it backfires and he ends up as sheriff.

So Dean and Finch end up having a showdown, and Dean wins. As Dean rushes for the ashes, Castiel transports them back. Lucky for them, Samuel Colt got the ashes and mailed it to them. Thanks to Lenore 's information, they find out that Eve is in Organ Pass, and they head there. There, they discover Eve's experiments, and Dean even names one of her experiments when Bobby gives him naming rights. So Dean names a cross-breed between a wrath and vampire, Jefferson Starship. Then the police show up Dean hides , but they too are Jefferson Starships. They eventually find Eve in a diner working as a waitress, and she tries to makes a deal with them.

She even turns into Mary Winchester to get them to work with her, but Dean refuses nether less, and tells her to bite him. Which she does, only to find out that Dean had earlier swallowed some phoenix ashes earlier. After their encounter with Eve, everyone begins to question Castiel. Everyone but Dean who still believes in Castiel. When Castiel comes to save them, he accidentally gives himself away, and Dean catches this.

So Dean helps them trap Castiel, and questions him. Dean also tells Castiel he is like a brother to him, and asks him to stop. When demon come, Dean is forced to flee, but takes one last look at Castiel and leaves. Castiel is now free, and visits Dean. After a talk, Dean and Castiel's relationship breaks, and Castiel leaves. After Castiel's visit, Bobby reveals that Castiel also stole a diary from Bobby's house. As they read Bobby's photocopies, Dean gets a call from Ben. Ben tells Dean that men are in the house and killed Lisa's boyfriend.

Dean tries to help from the phone, but Ben too is captured. Crowley, now on the other line, tells Dean to back off or he will kill Lisa and Ben. Dean refuses to back down, and begins to hunt down Lisa and Ben. He even begins to torture demons for their location. Sam tries to help him, but Dean tells Sam to back off. Then Dean accidentally breaks the Devil's Trap , and the demon attack. Castiel comes in and saves Dean. Dean doesn't want anything to do with Castiel though. Later, its Balthazar who gives Dean Lisa and Ben's location. Dean finds Ben and Lisa after taking out some of Crowley's goons. He unties them, only to find out that Lisa is possessed by a demon, and she hold Ben hostage. Dean manages to free Ben by splashing holy water at "Lisa". Then he manages to free the knife from "Lisa's" hand and begins to excorise her.

He continues to excorise her after the demon stabbed Lisa's body. Once the demon is out, Dean moves quickly to save Lisa's life, and carries her out to the car, and rushes her to the hospital. Dean stays by Lisa's bedside, and then Castiel arrives and heals her. Dean asks Castiel for favor to erase Lisa and Ben's memory of him. Dean approaches them after this and apologizes to them. A week later, Bobby, Dean and Sam go looking for Dr. Visyak, and they find her in an alley. She is bleeding and tells them how to open the door to Purgatory. Then Castiel appears, and Dean tells Castiel to leave. Castiel tells him he is done playing nice, and promises to put Sam back. This confuses Dean, until Castiel touches Sam, and breaks down the wall inside his head, sending Sam into a comatose state.

Dean stays by Sam's bedside, while Sam is comatose. After Balthazar giving them Castiel's location, Bobby manages to convince Dean to go with him after Castiel. Before Dean leaves, he leaves Sam their location. So Dean and Bobby head out. When they arrive they scope out the place, which is full of angels. Then a demon cloud comes, and Dean and Bobby run back to the Impala. The demon smash into the impala, flipping it over.

When Dean wakes up, he checks on Bobby, who is okay. So the two sneak into the place, and walk in as Crowley, and Raphael are doing the ritual. Then Castiel shows up, and shows his new power. With this he kills Raphael, and Crowley runs away. Dean tries to talk Castiel to powering down without making Cas angry, and even reminds Castiel that he used to be family.

But Castiel doesn't want to power down and after Sam stabbing him, proves he is no longer an angel. Dean is very shocked to hearing Castiel proclaiming himself to be god. When Castiel leaves, Dean and the others head back to Bobby's, and Dean begins to fix the Impala, since there is nothing else he can do. Dean is concerned for Sam's mental health since the wall is gone. Dean admits to Bobby that he can't take anymore hits, and will believe that Sam is "fine". Then they manage to summon and bind Death. Dean tries to appease Death , and then Castiel shows up and Dean orders Death to kill him. Castiel frees Death and leaves.

Death tells Dean the only way to stop Castiel is for Castiel to let the souls back into Purgatory. Dean doesn't think Castiel will do this, until Castiel comes asking for help. In turn, Dean helps Castiel and the souls are released back into Purgatory, but the Leviathans remain. Dean watches them destroy Castiel and spread throughout the water, leaving only his trenchcoat behind.

He also deals with Sam seeing Lucifer while looking into a Leviathan killing. When he returns, he finds Sam gone. Dean eventually finds Sam and convinces him that his reality is real. He and Sam return to Bobby's, but find it burned down. Dean calls Bobby, but gets Bobby's voice mail, and finally tells Bobby how he is really doing. He and Sam are soon attacked by Edgar , and Dean's leg gets broken. On the way to the hospital, Dean begs them not to take them to Sioux Falls General, but is ignored. He wakes up with his leg in a cast, and Bobby comes in and saves Dean from the hospital.

Dean spends 3 weeks in a cast until Sam takes off, and Dean saws the cast off. Dean soon catches up with Sam, and punches Sam for taking the Impala. Sam explains the situation to Dean, and Dean appears to agree but later kills Amy behind Sam's back. Dean feel guilty about this, plus feeling guilty lying to Sam about it and begins drinking more than normal. This guilt is what Osiris hones onto and puts Dean on trial. On trial he encounters Jo again, and before Osiris can call the third witness, Dean accepts the charges.

Dean is saved when Sam stabs Osiris. Dean still has nightmares about Castiel dying and killing Amy, which causes him to wake up and start drinking. But he continues on and he and Sam go to work on a case where witches are wreaking havoc in Prosperity, Indiana. When they fail to stop the witches, Sam and Dean manage to get Maggie and Don to calm down. Sam approaches Dean about what's bothering him, but Dean doesn't tell Sam anything. When Dean is cloned by a Leviathan , Dean is forced to lock the Impala up and it not too happy about it. Although, before he can cut the off his clone, the clone tells Sam that Dean killed Amy. This causes Sam to leave Dean. A week later Dean runs into Sam in Lily Dale. After some advice from the other side, Dean apologizes to Sam but says he doesn't feel bad for what he did to Amy.

He and Sam soon reconcile. The Amazons age and grow in a very short period of time until they reach adulthood, and so the baby is birthed in mere hours, and reaches adolescence in a few days. Amazon teens must go through a rite of passage in which they must kill their fathers - the event that Dean and Sam were investigating in the first place. When Dean's daughter comes to Dean, she lies and tells him she needs his help to escape the other Amazons.

A wary Dean eventually sees through her scheme and they end up drawing their weapons and stand ready to face one another. Sam, recently enlightened to his brother's situation, upon entering the room decides that Dean cannot bring himself to kill his own daughter, and so, after a short confrontation, he kills her. Sam then reminds Dean that he had to do it, just like Dean "had" to kill Amy. Season 8 starts with Dean coming back from Purgatory after spending one year there it is unknown how time differs in Purgatory, so it's possible Dean was there for a significantly longer period of time.

He came back with the help of a friend, Benny , who is a vampire. Dean carries Benny's soul out of Purgatory and resurrects. Dean travels to the safehouse in Whitefish, Montana where he bumps into Sam. The brothers reunite. When Sam asks Dean where he had been and what happened to Castiel , Dean replies saying that he had been in Purgatory and as far as he knows Castiel didn't make it. When Dean asks about what Sam has been doing Sam truthfully tells him that he has quit hunting and has been in an relationship with a girl, Amelia. When Dean asks if Sam ever tried to find him he replies that he just drove away. Dean starts checking Sam's old mobiles which he had ditched in which he found voicemails of Kevin Tran who had managed to escape from Crowley and is in hiding.

Sam and Dean find him and they discover that he was taken to Crowley to read another Word of God. The tablet is entitled Demons, and details different ways to kill or banish them, including a spell to shut the gates of Hell. Sam and Dean decide to to seal the Gates of Hell forever and they bring Kevin into this plan. Kevin agrees, but his girlfriend then appears possessed by Crowley. Crowley tells Kevin to come with him but instead he escapes with the Winchesters.

Driven mad by losing the opportunity of having Kevin read the tablet, Crowley kills Kevin's girlfriend. After a while Dean gets a call from Benny who is seen to be taking a break. Dean talks to Benny and says that he can't call just to get an update but if he needs help he will be there. When Sam falls into a coma, he takes him to a local hospital and finds out that Sam is going to die. Dean then goes to a church and prays to all the angels for help. He later lets " Ezekiel " possess Sam so that they both may heal. When Sam is knocked unconscious by three demons, Ezekiel rescues him. Dean is still skeptical about the angel's motives, who only asks him to trust him. He also stops Kevin from leaving them, and calls him family.

Fortunately, they're able to save Cas, so they take him back to the HQ. When learning that Cas had finally had sex, he makes a joke about it. Later on, Dean is given the choice of having the angel heal Sam or keep Cas around. Dean makes the hard decision of having the angel, so he ended up having to kick Cas out of their lives. They meet up again with Charlie. After she gets killed by the Witch, Dean begs "Ezekiel" to save her, which he reluctantly does.

Later, Dean and Sam get possessed from the Witch and are turned into minions of hers. They then hunt down Charlie and Dorothy , to try and kill them. They aren't turned back until Charlies saves their asses by killing the Witch. Dean uses a spell that gives him the ability to talk to animals. He gets along quite well with their witness, despite the fact that he doesn't really like dogs. In Bad Boys , it is revealed that Dean was sent to a boys home, from his father, because he lost all their money. The episode showed a couple flashbacks about him there. He was sassy when he first got there, mad that his father left him there.

But, towards the end he was upset to go. Also, when there, he met a girl Robin , that he developed a crush on. In this episode, Dean also renews his virginity and joins a chastity group. In the classic Dean fashion, he has sex with an ex-porn star, after the meeting. This then causes him to get abducted by the Vesta , the brothers originally came to hunt down. At the end, Dean was about to tell Sam about the angel inside him, but then gets stopped. In Holy Terror , the mid-season finale, Dean is still unsure of the idea to not tell Sammy, but because of "Ezekiel", he still uses the Trials as an excuse. He also reveals to Cas, that he didn't tell Sam that he had asked Cas to leave them, and continues lying.

Dean also finds out that Ezekiel isn't actually "Ezekiel", but is actually Gadreel , a good angel from Heaven that's doing bad things on Earth. At the Man of Letters base, shit goes down. Dean gets help from Kevin's tablet to expel an angel from the body. He uses the ritual to remove Gadreel. Doing what he knows is right, he tells Sam all about how he wanted to save him, so he used an angel. But, the angel wasn't who he said he was, and is actually a bad guy, and needs to go. Sam punches him and knocks him out for a minute. Upon waking, Dean follows Sam in the next room to see Kevin's body falling to the floor, lifeless. Sam then tells Dean that he isn't actually Sam and is instead, Gadreel, still, because the he messed up the ritual.

Then, he leaves, leaving Dean alone, having lost both Kevin and Sam. In Road Trip , after burning Kevin's body, Dean prepares to go after Gadreel for revenge before Castiel shows up and convinces him to work with Crowley to expel Gadreel instead. Dean does so reluctantly and with Crowley's help, tracks Gadreel through the Impala which he has stolen. Dean confronts Gadreel who knocks him out, but causes enough of a distraction that Castiel is able to subdue the rogue angel. After tying up Gadreel, Dean confronts him about his actions and betrayal, but Gadreel refuses to leave Sam and insists he is doing what he has to.

Dean allows Crowley to start torturing Gadreel to try to bring out Sam's mind, but eventually can't watch anymore and leaves with Castiel comforting him. When Crowley breaks into Gadreel's "factory settings," Dean has to restrain Castiel from harming him when he learns who the angel actually is. As Gadreel is resistant to torture, Dean agrees to allow Crowley possess Sam to help him expel the angel in exchange for his freedom. The plan works and Gadreel is expelled. After Castiel heals Sam of the damage from the torture and some more of his injuries from the Trials, Dean tries to apologize and then leaves on his own to hunt Gadreel, not wanting anyone else to get hurt.

Sam is so furious he doesn't even try to stop Dean. In First Born , alone in a bar, Dean is approached by Crowley for help with finding the First Blade , the only weapon that can kill Abaddon. Dean reluctantly allies himself with the demon and begins the search by looking for information on a hunt his father did where he captured, interrogated and exorcised a demon who claimed to know about the Blade. The information they find leads them to a hunter named Tara and eventually to the biblical Cain who is now a very powerful demon. Dean asks for Cain's help in locating the Blade, telling him they need to kill a Knight of Hell.

Dean is pissed at Crowley when Cain reveals that he created the Knights which Crowley knew, but is surprised to learn that Cain was the one that killed them all. When Cain refuses to help, Dean sneaks back with Crowley to search for the Blade only to be caught by Cain. When four demons show up, Dean is left to fight three of them single-handedly. He wins and Cain tells him how he slaughtered the Knights after they kidnapped his wife who was killed by Abaddon. Cain still refuses to help and is unimpressed by Dean's threats.

Cain leaves as a demon army arrives, but returns willing to help and explains that the Blade is useless without the Mark of Cain which he can transfer to someone worthy, such as another killer. He'd let Dean fight alone to see if he was worthy and offers him the Mark, trying to warn him that it comes with a terrible price. Dean takes the Mark anyway without learning what the price is and after telling them that the Blade is at the bottom of the ocean, Cain teleports Dean and Crowley to safety while he takes on the demon army, asking for Dean to return after he kills Abaddon to kill him too. Dean is pissed at Crowley as he realizes Crowley used him to get access to the Blade.

Crowley confirms this, but while Dean threatens to kill him when everything is over, he recognizes he still needs Crowley and sends him after the Blade. In King of the Damned , in the presence of the First Blade, the Mark grants Dean immunity to Abaddon's powers at first with great concentration and then no effort. He also displays telekinesis and strength great enough to lift Abadddon off her feet effortlessly. However, the Mark and Blade's effects cause him to go overboard and repeatedly stab the dead Abaddon after he kills her.

His need for the First Blade is also very detrimental to his health. He even works with Crowley to hunt down Metatron. When he does find Metatron, he tries to kill him but fails. Metatron then stabs Dean in the heart, killing him. Crowley approaches Dean and tells him that Dean is a lot like Cain who also died because he wasn't willing to kill innocents but Cain's very sacrifice is what made him become a demon. Crowley then tells Dean to open his eyes. Dean does so, but returns as a demon more specifically a knight of hell. In Black , Dean is seen at a bar drinking with Crowley. Dean later has sex with a waitress called Ann Marie. In Reichenbach , Dean tries to touch a stripper therefore a security guard tries to stop him, as demon Dean, he violently assaults him.

Sam later locks up Dean after he attacks Cole Trenton. Dean manages to escape, he looks for Sam with a hammer, the angel Castiel , stops Dean with his new grace. Sam cures Dean and they hit the road. Dean is a human once again. In Paper Moon Dean relaxes with Sam as they sit by a lake, when they read about unknown killings caused by a unknown creature. That creature turns out to be Kate the werewolf from Bitten. In Fan Fiction ,. In Ask Jeeves ,. In Girls, Girls, Girls ,. In Hibbing ,. Dean has green eyes, freckles on his face and short-cropped hair that is dark blonde. He is 6'1"--ironically making him shorter than his younger brother Sam --and muscular. Dean is noted to be "handsome" or even "pretty" by other characters on multiple occasions. He usually wears a plaid shirt over a T-shirt, jeans, and boots, unless he has to wear a disguise in order to impersonate someone.

Until Season 6 , Dean often wore his father 's leather jacket. He also used to wear a watch and a silver ring. As of Season 4, Dean has a hand-shaped burn scar on his left shoulder from where Castiel pulled him out of Hell. This mark has since disappeared from his body. For the first four seasons, Dean also wore an amulet around his neck that resembled the head of a bull made of brass, attached to a black cord. This amulet was given to him by Sam as a Christmas gift when they were children.

Hey guys. Welcome back to Lisa's Study Guides. Right now, it's in the middle of December, and I know that most of you should have finished school by now, and you're enjoying your school holidays. Because it is summer holidays, and most people aren't really studying right now, this is for the truly keen beans, the people who are reading the text before the school starts, which, by the way, you should be doing. I'll pop that video in a card up above and so if you are studying Burial Rites, then this video is for you. If you're not, as always, it doesn't really matter because the type of advice that I will be giving would definitely be relevant to any text, because it's more about your thinking and how you actually go around approaching essay topics.

This book covers the last few months of her life, living with these people who she's sharing her story with. She has been sentenced because she has murdered Natan. And although we first initially hear that she has murdered this guy, when we start to hear her story develop, that's when we start to see that there are shades of gray. That she did have reason behind what she did, and you can start to feel quite sympathetic towards her.

At the same time, though, and this is what today's essay question will be about. There's a lot to do with the patriarchy. Agnes being not just a woman, but an intelligent woman, was something that was looked down upon, and people were scared of that. That's just to give you a little bit of context so that we can start this essay topic. What are the keywords here? To me, they are women, no power, patriarchy and dominates. These words really stand out to me, and these are the words that I feel are necessary for me to focus on in order to answer this prompt properly. The second step that I do is I define keywords. So what I do here is I try to understand what the keywords mean and also their implications. So this is how I'm going to break down this essay prompt.

I am going to do two body paragraphs where I agree and one body paragraph where I disagree. So this should mean that I'm only agreeing to a certain extent. Here's a video about this type of essay structure and response:. So my first body paragraph is yes, under male authority, the women are robbed of freedom and power. My example for that would be Agnes, who is the protagonist. She is a woman who's being sentenced to death for murdering Natan, more about him later, and, as a result, society condemns her and she's robbed of her identity and freedom.

My second body paragraph would be another agreement, but this time I'm going to focus on the men. In this second body paragraph, my argument is men hold exploitative power over women. One, Natan, the person who was murdered, toys with all his whores, demonstrating male dominance in s Iceland. All his workmaids are stranded, shipwrecked with nowhere else to go, highlighting women's hopelessness in changing their situation. Additionally, there's Blondal. So Blondal is a government authority and he's torn when commanding Lauga, Lauga, not too sure how to say that. You guys let me know. The third one is one where I disagree. Here will be that there are rare instances of female empowerment in the novel. The first one will be Rosa, the poet. So Rosa has an affair with Natan, but Kent praises Rosa and she's described to be a wonderful woman and beautiful.

Rosa transcends patriarchal structures, as she is assertive, headstrong, going against social codes in an act of female empowerment. The second one will be Agnes. Her storytelling and ability to express what she is inside allows her to gain a voice in the patriarchal world that has silenced her. Through her storytelling, she asserts her self-worth and dignity and despite the fact that she has been locked down, she is being treated like crap by the men, her ability to hold herself strong and to be able to face her death with dignity means that with some sense, at least from within, that sense of empowerment has not been completely diminished. As the VCE English exam creeps up on us, many of you will be testing your writing skills under timed conditions if not, then you better!!!

But, have you sat down under timed conditions for 15 minutes of Reading Time? Have you thought about how to maximise reading time? Many of you may have already figured out how you will approach Reading Time in your exam. Some of you will have a rough idea, while some will pay attention to detail — knowing how to spend each and every minute in that 15 minutes of silence. During Year 12, I was somewhere in between. Keep reading afterwards for more details! It is worth spending a few extra seconds contemplating how you would break down your other available prompts.

Reason: This may obscure your interpretation of the contention. The contention is the first thing you need to get right. So sit back, read the article for what it is, and absorb as much of the argument presented to you. The more times you read something, the better your mind will consolidate the cold material in front of you! You've done all that hard work thinking up 'mental plans' during Reading Time, let's put them to paper.

Don't skip this step, because you would otherwise have wasted your precious 15 minutes getting ahead. Moreover, it's highly likely you'll forget the points you want to write about if you just store it in your brain. Remember that you are in an adrenaline-driven situation, where nerves can get the better of you. Avoid any mind blanks by guaranteeing yourself success and write the damn plan down!

Aiming for an essay in 60 minutes can often turn into 65 minutes, or even longer. At the very least if you do go over time with a '55 minute per essay' rule, you will put yourself in a position where you can afford to go slightly overtime, and yet still have enough time for other essays. This is a step that many people skip, but if you're reading this blog - you won't be joining them. A quick review of your work can help you edit errors you didn't notice while writing.

As you practise in the lead up to exams, take note of what errors you tend to make when writing. Is it expression, punctuation, or spelling errors? Keep an eye on your most common mistakes when proof-reading to be more a more effective editor. It is these small incremental changes you can make in your essays which add up to make a powerful impact on the final product. So previously I've done a video where I talked about how to write a thousand word, a thousand, a thousand-worded essay, and one hour. And so that segues into this particular video where I'm talking about writing three essays in three hours.

So if you haven't watched that video, then I'll pop it up in the comment. I'll pop it up in the card up above. I would recommend you go watch that first before you watch this, because pretty much all of the concepts that I talk about in that video, uh, I just expected details that you should know for this video. So instead of actually breaking down the essays as I did in the previous video, what I'm going to do this time is talk more so about, you know, how to actually write three essays in three hours and just not get burnt out and not die, basically. So I've got a few tips for you guys, but I'll keep this short. First thing is that yes, you do want to practice at least one time writing three essays in three hours.

And the reason why I say that is because inevitably there will come times where one essay will kind of overlap into another hour. And you just want to ensure that you can know how to handle those situations when we're practicing in one hour blocks. I think it's fantastic to make sure that we can do that, but then kind of like three hours and three essays is another ballgame altogether. So I would recommend at least practicing once sitting down somewhere and just smashing out the three hours worth of work, just so that you know exactly what it's going to feel like when you go into the exam.

Now, most schools will actually offer a, like a mock exam for you to do so that literally could be your one practice that you just need. But if you were like me, you might want to do it twice. So in your own time, kind of print off your own exam paper and go ahead and just set aside three hours and just do it that way. The second thing is I heavily emphasized doing reading time. So reading time is pretty much your mental thinking game going strong. And this is where a lot of your pre-work will be done before we actually go into the essays themselves.

So make sure you practice reading time. It's 15 minutes before the actual exam, but in that 15 minutes, you can plan three of your essays and you can look up in your dictionary, any key words that you might want to define, or you could even look up the dictionary and try to find synonyms for particular keywords. So what I mean by that is when you open up a dictionary and you look up that word inside the dictionary, often the definition for it will have synonyms for it.

So that's like my little hack that I had when I was at school. And then the last thing I would say is just make sure you know what to do if you go over time. So, like I mentioned before, there may be situations where, you know, worst case scenario, you don't finish your essay in time. And that could be because of many reasons. But first thing for you to remember is if you're running over time, sacrifice your conclusion first, do not sacrifice your third body paragraph.

I think mostly what happens is students will kind of be somewhere in the third body paragraph for that essay, but rather than skipping that and just do it a little bit of a mess to finish it up and then going into the conclusion, finish off your third body paragraph. And then just forget about the conclusion. The reason why I say that is because a conclusion is basically just the summary of what your entire essay is about.

It's not really supposed to be, to add in any new information where as your third body paragraph. You're still explaining your ideas. You're still elaborating and discussing the prompt itself. So that is way more important to get you the marks that you need than a conclusion. The next thing I would do if you're running behind is save a proofreading until very last. So in the last video I talked about doing proofreading last five minutes of every essay. But if you do not have time for that later, leave all your proofreading until the very end and, and you might find that you only have five minutes, it's true proofread all of your essays, but at least you kind of have that reassurance was that you made yourself more time to write beforehand.

And so if you literally find yourself writing right up until the last minute and you can't perforate fine sacrifice that too. You still have at least half a paragraph to go, but you know, the first hour is over and you need to move onto your second essay. I feel like you can either approach this two ways. The first way is just finish it off, but then move on to the next one as quick as possible. And obviously your hope there is that you will finish the second essay in time within that hour. So that by the time you get to your thing, essay, you are on track again. But in the other alternative that you could do, and probably one that I via towards a little bit more is just stop your third paragraph.

You still have maybe five more sentences you still want to write, but just move onto your next one. I think that's kind of important because what happens is once we start running into the next hour, you will find that with your first essay, you'll run maybe five minutes into your second hour, but then you might find that you run 10 minutes into the third hour with your second essay leaving only 15 minutes to finish your third essay. And that might not be like what you want. And you might know that you just won't be able to achieve that because the third essay is maybe the hardest one that you left to last. And that's the one that usually takes you the longest. So yeah, like these are just thoughts and considerations for you guys to take away with whatever you guys do.

I think just be strategic. Think about these things beforehand, because they are things that could trip you up when you are in the exam, you're stressed, you're anxious, you're under time pressure and you just need to get things done. It might kind of make you do like bad decisions or you might do something out of the ordinary that you normally wouldn't do. But if you think about these things beforehand and think about, okay, this is what I'm going to do. If this situation occurs, then at least you kind of have some control over what's happening. And that gives you a little bit of reassurance. That is it from me. I wanted to let you guys know that because we are approaching the end of year.

The first part follows their childhood, and their interactions with characters such as Boo Radley, Walter Cunningham, Miss Caroline and Mrs Dubose, while the second part follows the Tom Robinson trial itself, testing the children on the moral lessons of their childhood and disillusioning them to the overwhelming racism of their community. All throughout the novel resonate messages of tolerance over prejudice. The intersection of these themes—race, prejudice and justice—forces us to confront the reality that our legal institutions may not be as colour-blind and impartial as we thought. All of that sounds pretty dire, so is the novel then purely pessimistic? In Part One, we find an unlikely hero in Mrs. Another example of Atticus switching up what it means to be heroic is in the way he puts down Tim Johnson. Atticus transforms this into yet another lesson about courage: "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.

This knowledge seems to be one of those unfortunate things that comes with age and life experience. Thus, on the one hand, you have this disillusionment and loss on innocence, but on the other, you also have this shift in worldview that may well be valuable in the long run. Scout experiences similar disappointments, and they both grapple with other questions of conscience, tolerance and conformity throughout the novel. Walter Cunningham and Mrs. Dubose are covered above, but try to form some of these connections yourself. Boo Radley is the key character who connects the two parts of the story. He spends much of the first part in hiding, occasionally leaving gifts for the kids in a tree chapter 7 , or giving them a blanket during a fire chapter 8.

In the second part however, he emerges to save Jem from Bob Ewell and is actually a rather unassuming man. In many ways, the first part of the novel sets up and drives these ideas home. I have ample firsthand experience. So is there an issue when a story of Black injustice only elevates white people as heroes? Which brings us to a topic that is a bit knottier than it might first seem. This means that you might agree for a paragraph or two, emphasising the importance of context, before expanding on this idea of courage in the third.

In your opinion, what is the most central and relevant message from To Kill a Mockingbird? Challenge: In To Kill a Mockingbird , how are isolation and loneliness different, and what is Lee suggesting about society in this regard? Something that I want you to take away from this video is being able to develop a contention statement that is a complete, solid foundation for your essay. It generally means bravery and fearlessness, but what kinds of courage are explored in the novel?

Immediately, we can see that this is a theme-based prompt. You could contend that the novel is indeed about courage, as Atticus not only teaches it to his children but also applies it to his defence of Tom Robinson in the face of structural racism. However, courage is also linked more broadly to empathy, which is explored as a panacea for discrimination. A complete contention like this breaks up your points neatly, but also grounds everything you have to say in an essay that still addresses the question and the idea of courage. For example, paragraph one would start by looking at the forms of courage he teaches to his children. Not only does he teach his children about the importance of courage, but he goes on to exemplify those very lessons himself.

However, in the final paragraph we might take a bit of a turn. Atticus, in having the courage to see Tom as an equal, is probably reflecting another very important value in the novel—namely, empathy. Though he admires Mrs. The idea of empathy as a form of courage is also reflected in what he teaches them about Boo Radley. In other words, he sees empathy as a form of courage in being the first to break social stigmas and overcome the various forms of discrimination that separate us. Now to touch base again with the take away message. We contended that the novel is about courage because Atticus teaches it to Scout and Jem while also representing it in the trial.

We also contended that courage is linked to empathy, another key value that he imparts as it helps to overcome social barriers like discrimination. The aim was to build an essay on a contention that clearly props up the body of the essay itself, even when we were more confident with some other themes, and I think this plan does a pretty good job of covering that.
