A Prayer for Owen Meany Summary Summary
Chief Justice Daniel Straup wrote that his unexplained wound was "a distinguishing mark," and that "the defendant may not avoid the natural and reasonable inferences of remaining silent. Morrison, there had to be a 'goat' [ scapegoat ] and the undersigned being, as they thought, a friendless tramp, a Swede, and worst of all, an IWW, had no right to live anyway, and was therefore duly selected to be 'the goat'. The case turned into a major media event. President Woodrow Wilson , Helen Keller the blind and deaf author and fellow-IWW member , the Swedish ambassador and the Swedish public all became involved in a bid for clemency.
It generated international union attention, and critics charged that the trial and conviction were unfair. More recently, Utah Phillips considered Joe Hill to have been a political prisoner who was executed for his political agitation through songwriting. In a biography published in , William M. Adler concludes that Hill was probably innocent of murder, but also suggests that Hill came to see himself as worth more to the labor movement as a dead martyr than he was alive, and that this understanding may have influenced his decisions not to testify at the trial and subsequently to spurn all chances of a pardon.
Wilson , and cites Hilda Erickson's letter, which states that Hill had told her he had been shot by her former fiance. When Deputy Shettler, who led the firing squad, called out the sequence of commands preparatory to firing "Ready, aim," Hill shouted, "Fire — go on and fire! That same day, a dynamite bomb was discovered at the Tarrytown estate of John D. Archbold , President of the Standard Oil Company. Police theorized the bomb was planted by anarchists and IWW radicals as a protest against Hill's execution. The bomb was discovered by a gardener, who found four sticks of dynamite, weighing a pound each, half hidden in a rut in a driveway fifty feet from the front entrance of the residence.
The dynamite sticks were bound together by a length of wire, fitted with percussion caps, and wrapped with a piece of paper matching the color of the driveway, a path used by Archbold in going to or from his home by automobile. The bomb was later defused by police. I die like a true blue rebel. Don't waste any time in mourning. Could you arrange to have my body hauled to the state line to be buried? I don't want to be found dead in Utah. Thompson asserted that Joe's last words were "Don't mourn. His last will, which was eventually set to music by Ethel Raim, founder of the group The Pennywhistlers , requested a cremation and reads: .
My will is easy to decide For there is nothing to divide My kin don't need to fuss and moan "Moss does not cling to rolling stone" My body? Oh, if I could choose I would to ashes it reduce And let the merry breezes blow My dust to where some flowers grow Perhaps some fading flower then Would come to life and bloom again. This is my Last and final Will. Good Luck to All of you Joe Hill. Hill's body was sent to Chicago, where it was cremated; in accordance with his wishes, his ashes were placed into small envelopes and sent around the world to be released to the winds. In , it was discovered that an envelope had been seized by the United States Post Office Department in because of its " subversive potential". The envelope, with a photo affixed, captioned "Joe Hill murdered by the capitalist class, Nov.
Members of the IWW in Chicago quickly laid claim to the contents of the envelope. After some negotiations, the last of Hill's ashes but not the envelope that contained them was turned over to the IWW in The weekly In These Times ran notice of the ashes and invited readers to suggest what should be done with them. Bragg did indeed swallow a small bit of the ashes with some Union beer to wash it down, and for a time carried Shocked's share for the eventual completion of Hoffman's last prank. The ashes sent to Sweden were only partly cast to the wind. The main part was interred in the wall of a union office in Landskrona , a minor city in the south of the country, with a plaque commemorating Hill.
That room is now the reading room of the local city library. One small packet of ashes was scattered at a ceremony which unveiled a monument to six unarmed IWW coal miners buried in Lafayette, Colorado , who had been machine-gunned by Colorado state police in in the Columbine Mine massacre. Until the graves of five of these men were unmarked. Another famous Wobbly, Carlos Cortez , scattered Joe Hill's ashes on the graves at the commemoration. On the night of November 18, , the Southeast Michigan IWW General Membership Branch hosted a gathering of "wobs" in a remote wooded area at which a dinner, followed by a bonfire, featured a reading of Hill's last will, "and then his ashes were released into the flames and carried up above the trees.
The next day To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the execution of Joe Hill, Philip S. Foner published a book, The Case of Joe Hill , about the trial and subsequent events, which concludes that the case was a miscarriage of justice. Hill's handwritten last will and testament was uncovered in the first decade of the 21st century by archivist Michael Nash of the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Archives of New York University. Additional archival materials were donated to the Walter P. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Active organizations. Defunct organizations. When creating your own AP Literature reading list for the student choice free-response, try to pick works that are diverse in author, setting, genre, and theme. This will maximize your ability to comprehensively answer a student choice question about pretty much anything with one of the works you've focused on. Major themes and devices: magic, dreams, transformation, foolishness, man vs. Major themes and devices: destructive love, exile, social and economic class, suffering and passion, vengeance and violence, unreliable narrator, frame narrative, family dysfunction, intergenerational narratives.
Major themes and devices: Tradition and duty, personal freedom, hypocrisy, irony, social class, family, "maintaining appearances", honor. Major themes and devices: slavery, race, magic, madness, wildness, civilization vs. As you can see, while there is some thematic overlap in my chosen works, they also cover a broad swathe of themes. They are also all very different in style although you'll just have to take my word on that one unless you go look at all of them yourself , and they span a range of time periods and genres as well.
However, while there's not necessarily a specific, mandated AP Literature reading list, there are books that come up again and again on the suggestion lists for student choice free-response questions. When a book comes up over and over again on exams, this suggests both that it's thematically rich, so you can use it to answer lots of different kinds of questions, and that the College Board sees a lot of value in the work.
To that end, I've assembled a list, separated by time period, of all the books that have appeared on the suggested works list for student choice free-response questions at least twice since While you certainly shouldn't be aiming to read all of these books there's way too many for that! Other books by authors from this list are also going to be strong choices. It's likely that some of your class reading will overlap with this list, too. I've divided up the works into chunks by time period. In addition to title, each entry includes the author, whether the work is a novel, play, or something else, and when it was first published or performed. Works are alphabetical by author. Warning: Not all works pictured included in AP Literature reading list below.

You probably won't be writing about poetry on your student choice essay—most just aren't meaty enough in terms of action and character to merit a full-length essay on the themes when you don't actually have the poem in front of you a major exception being The Odyssey.
That doesn't mean that you shouldn't be reading poetry, though! You should be reading a wide variety of poets from different eras to get comfortable with all the varieties of poetic language. This will make the poetry analysis essay and the multiple-choice questions about poetry much easier! For those poets who were working during more than one of the time periods sketched out below, I tried to place them in the era in which they were more active. I've placed an asterisk next to the most notable and important poets in the list; you should aim to read one or two poems by each of the starred poets to get familiar with a broad range of poetic styles and eras. You might rather burn books than read them after the exam, but please refrain.
How many books do you need to read? Well, you definitely need to get very familiar with four-five for essay-writing purposes, and beyond that, the more the better! View code. Vaitheeswaran 4.
